Peter Jackson did it again – Desolation of Smaug: Review

Peter Jackson is by far my favorite director. He makes movies that others can only dream of making. Last weekend, I went to my local theater to watch the second movie based on The Hobbit book by J.R. Tolkien. I wasn’t really expecting all that much. After I watched The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, I decided that I liked the Lord of the Rings movies more.

One of the factors that played a role in my opinion on An Unexpected Journey is that it seemed too comedic. Of course, Lord of the Rings had plenty of humor in it, The Hobbit just seemed like it had too much of it. However, Desolation of Smaug has a much more serious tone to it. For me, that made it more enjoyable. In Desolation of Smaug, the humor is more subtle and less in your face.

A piece in the movie that I really thought was funny was when Legolas made fun of Gloin’s picture of his wife and son, Gimli. That sort of humor is the kind that goes really well with the Lord of the Rings, Hobbit movies.

The rest of the Desolation of Smaug was incredible. The cinematography and feel of the movie is unlike any other, regular film. Peter Jackson has definitely proven that he pays attention to detail. The scenes with Smaug are extremely well done. Overall the movie was a great one.  And I’m quite certain that next year, I’ll be saying the same thing about the next Hobbit movie.

Below is the ending song for Desolation of Smaug by Ed Sheeran:
