Should you work from home?

Working remotely is becoming a more common thing with each day that goes by. So the question “should I work from home” is also gaining in popularity. With the efficiency and capacity of the internet of today, working from home has fewer drawbacks than ever. But is there anything you should worry about when you’re considering working from home?

There are a few things I wanted to bring to your attention. I’ve been working from home for four years now, so I have some experience. I wanted to answer this question as plainly and honestly as I can for anyone wondering about this subject. So here it goes.

You’ll need good internet.

This is a given. If you’re working from home, you’ll probably be working from a computer, so you’ll need a good, reliable connection to the internet. Nowadays that isn’t commonly an issue, but is still something to think about.

If you’re a real people-person, you may suffer

It’s a little more difficult for people who love to be around people to work at home. It should be self-explanatory, but you’ll see and interact with less people at home than you would a traditional workplace.

I don’t consider myself a real hardcore people person (although I do love people), but even I have to work from my local coffee shops or college from time to time. It’s just nice to get out of the house and be around people sometimes. You may not find that necessary, but I do.

Collaboration can be difficult unless your coworkers rock

If your job involves collaborating, that’s obviously more difficult to do when working remotely.

Overall

I can’t really think of many downsides to working remotely. I still get to see my coworkers in person at events and special in-person staff meetings, so my job is a little less impersonal than some. And since I’ve had such a great experience with remote work, I highly recommend it.
