Does God love backsliding Christians? Backsliding in the Christian world generally means that a Christian has fallen back into sinful habits. It can be a painful time for the one backsliding, and even affect one’s faith.
Many people that go through this wonder if God even loves them anymore. But the truth is, God is with us even when we stumble. The Bible really hounds the point that God is our loving father, and he forgives us. Not just for our past, but for things we may do in the future.
The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand.
– Psalm 37:23:24 ESV
Paul shares about his own struggles with sinful behavior. Every Christian can probably agree that God loved Paul. Jesus personally called on him to go and proclaim the gospel. So if God loved Paul even though he would sin sometimes, doesn’t that mean He still loves you?
We know that the Law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not do. But what I hate, I do.
– Romans 7:14-15 ESV
God isn’t a respecter of persons. So there’s no way this grace only extends to Paul. God’s children are going to fall, but He’s there to pick us back up. And He never stops loving us, regardless of our actions.
Does that mean we should continue in sin? No! We need to cut out sin from our lives, wherever it exists. But God still loves us even when we fall. We can’t outrun His love.
