The news has been all over the internet, and somehow, it doesn’t feel real. Satoru Iwata, Ninento president, passed away over the weekend, more specifically, on July 11, 2015. He was 55 years old.
Iwata suffered from a bile duct growth, as described in a press release by Nintendo. He had been suffering from poor health for a while, and even missed last year’s E3 because he had surgery for the issue. He missed this year’s E3 as well, but it was said he had business to attend to.
He left behind a legacy, originally joining the company in the 1980s. Becoming a director in June 2000 was a milestone for both Iwata and Nintendo, since he proved he could create quality work. He ascended to president in May 2001, then CEO in June 2013.
It is now up to the senior directors to lead Nintendo into what will undoubtedly be a new era. Satoru Iwata’s playfulness, and creativity, will surely be missed.
