There hasn’t been much information gleaned from the two minutes of trailer footage we’ve seen so far. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying to piece together the story of the upcoming movie. One area of concern is that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) has been noticeably absent from the trailer footage.
That has led many fans to speculate what has happened to Luke. Many have suggested that he has turned to the dark side, but could it be?
Oddly enough, as The Guardian pointed out, Mark Hamill himself discussed coming back to Star Wars as a dark lord on a show back in 1991. To make matters weirder, JJ Abrams–who directed Star Wars: The Force Awakens–was present on the show with Hamill as he discussed the possibility.
“As an actor that would be more fun to play. I just thought that’s the way it was going from when we finished. I figured that’s what will be the pivotal moment. I’ll have to come back, but it will be I have Han Solo in my crosshairs and I’ll be about to kill him or about to kill the Princess or about to kill somebody that we care about. It’s an old cornball movie, like World War II movies.”
Although unexpected twists are a Star Wars staple, the idea that Luke has turned to the dark side still seems unlikely.
As WBT noted, JJ addressed the missing Mark Hamill from the posters and trailers and blamed it on a large cast. He also said that Luke is a very important part of the movie.
“We were hoping people would care, but there are a lot of things that are not on the poster, as busy as the poster is. Certainly Luke is a very important aspect of the story.”
Thankfully, we don’t have that much longer to wait until we get to know all about the new film.
