Faith is such a powerful thing. It’s not just belief, faith can actually change things in our lives. You may have heard the old saying “faith can move mountains” and that is really true.
Faith can move mountains?
If you’re not familiar with that saying, it comes from a passage in the gospel of Matthew when Jesus is teaching his disciples. They had just failed at healing a man, so the man was brought to Jesus and Jesus healed him.
He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
– Matthew 17:20 ESV
He wasn’t being dramatic. Jesus knew how powerful even a little bit of faith is. And he was trying to get that across to his disciples.
It’s funny how so many Christians today think miracles are dead. If miracles are dead, then your faith is dead. Christianity is clear that miracles such as healings are available to us, so it’s crazy how rare they are today.
While you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”
– Acts 4:30 ESV
That verse is clearly telling us that we can heal people in the name of Jesus. The Bible is really clear about that. And it’s clear that those who believe and use the name of Jesus will see great things happen.
And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.”
And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”
– Matthew 17:16-17 ESV
What do we need to move mountains?
Jesus’ own disciples had trouble with doubt. And it’s clear that that’s the thing that gets in the way; doubt. Without doubt, and with faith the size of the smallest seed, you can move mountains.
child like faith
The scriptures are instructing us not to try to “grow our faith” but rather, to get rid of doubt. If we believe that the God of the universe is on our side, and has given us power in Jesus name, then we can do great things.
…“Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
– Matthew 18:2-4 ESV
Jesus isn’t specifically talking about healing or miracles in the verse, but that’s really what it comes down to. We have so many life experiences and other things that just get in the way and act as doubt. Supernatural healing doesn’t make sense in the natural, so we have a hard time believing it. But we’re called to have a child-like faith, without doubting. Let’s all try to get rid of the doubt, and believe our God is a God of wonders.
